Types of Asphalt Roofing Shingles
  1. Three-tab Asphalt Shingles: These are the most common type. They can be identified by their cutouts which make them look like three separate pieces. They’re slightly cheaper, easy to maintain, lightweight, energy efficient, and can last up to approximately 20 years.
  2. Architectural Dimensional Asphalt Shingles: These are thicker and are bonded with asphalt sealant and laminated with an additional asphalt layer. They have a more defined, beautiful structured look, and are more durable and waterproof than three-tab asphalt shingles. They’re also more energy efficient while increasing the value of your home and they can last up to 35 - 50 years.
  3. Premium Asphalt Shingles: As the name implies, these are designer versions of asphalt shingle roofing. These are made to emulate high-end cedar or slate roofing. Typically, you will use these where ordinances or HOA rules will not allow real cedar or slate roofs. You will get the same look as cedar or slate at about one tenth the price.
Shingles are made from these materials:
  1. Fiberglass Shingles: Manufactured with layers of woven fiberglass as the base, asphalt coating, and ceramic granules on top. These durable materials create a waterproof and UV-protected shingle while also being extremely lightweight..
  2. Organic Mat-based Shingles: This type of asphalt shingle roofing has a recycled felt paper layer for its base. They are heavier, thicker, and slightly more expensive than fiberglass shingles, but they are also more durable and flexible. The downside to Organic Mat-based Shingles is they are less fire resistant and susceptible to warping.

What Are The Longest Lasting Roof Shingles?

CertainTeed is one of the best brands of roof shingles out there. CertainTeed are the shingles to go for if you plan on staying in your home for more than 20 years. They are high quality, thick, and triple laminate dimensional shingles with three-piece laminated fiberglass construction. They are durable and strong, and come in many styles and colors.

As far as asphalt shingles go, the thicker the shingle, the longer it is going to last. Most importantly, you must hire a qualified experienced certified roofing contractor to do the installation. While it is typical for shingles to last between 20-40 years, the lifespan of your roof can be impacted by improper installation, complicated roof design, and long-term exposure to harsh weather conditions.

Improper roofing installation can leave your new roof vulnerable to leaks and structural damage that impair the shingles’ flexibility, durability, and waterproofing. This can mean you could be potentially replacing your roof after only 8 - 12 years. In addition, roofing manufacturers typically will not honor their warranty if the roof was not installed correctly by an experienced certified roofing contractor.

Are CertainTeed Shingles Better Than GAF Shingles?

For homeowners and builders alike, CertainTeed and GAF are both top-notch, highly rated asphalt shingle brands in the industry. They are well known for their premium features, quality, cost, styles, and long warranties. Which roofing shingle manufacturer is better for your needs than the other? Here are some critical factors to consider:

CertainTeed has one of the best roof shingles in its class and has a reputation for manufacturing premium roofing materials. They are known for their outstanding quality and offer top-of-the-line shingle products. Lately, in response to growing lower cost competition, they have begun adding more cost-effective products. Their Landmark shingle would be an example of their more cost-effective shingle lines.

CertainTeed has maintained their advantage over GAF by making thicker shingles. The thicker material of the shingles makes them more resistant to impacts, wind, and cracking. CertainTeed typically costs more, but you get better quality and longer life. They have some of the best expertise in high-end shingles. CertainTeed may be the shingle manufacturer to consider when you want fewer loopholes in the warranty fine print, and you find an experienced, reputable roofing company that is certified to install CertainTeed products.

GAF, on the other hand, is the largest manufacturer of residential asphalt roofing shingles in the United States. They offer budget-friendly options similar in cost to IKO and Owens-Corning. GAF has high standards as well - it only awards the top 2% of roofing contractors in each market the status of Master Elite Contractor. GAF provides consistent reliable and quality roofing products.

The bottom line is GAF offers good quality and durability, and manufactures lower cost middle-tier shingles rather than high-end shingles. This is an important consideration if you think you might be moving in less than 10 or 15 years. Most customers do not want to pay premium prices for roofing when they know they will not be living in the same home later on down the road. As with CertainTeed, you’ll want to hire a qualified experienced certified roofing contractor in your area who is certified to install GAF products.

Most homeowners only purchase 1 or 2 roofs during their lifetime. It is a large investment and it is important for you to make the proper decision on selecting an experienced certified roofing contractor. Here are some roofing blog topics that will help educate you in making that decision:
