1. Three-tab Asphalt Shingles: These are the most common type. They can be identified by their cutouts which make them look like three separate pieces. They’re slightly cheaper, easy to maintain, lightweight, energy efficient, and can last up to approximately 20 years.
2. Architectural Dimensional Asphalt Shingles: These are thicker and are bonded with asphalt sealant and laminated with an additional asphalt layer. They have a more defined, beautiful structured look, and are more durable and waterproof than three-tab asphalt shingles. They’re also more energy efficient while increasing the value of your home and they can last up to 35 - 50 years.
3. Premium Asphalt Shingles: As the name implies, these are designer versions of asphalt shingle roofing. These are made to emulate high-end cedar or slate roofing. Typically, you will use these where ordinances or HOA rules will not allow real cedar or slate roofs. You will get the same look as cedar or slate at about one tenth the price.

1. Fiberglass Shingles: Manufactured with layers of woven fiberglass as the base, asphalt coating, and ceramic granules on top. These durable materials create a waterproof and UV-protected shingle while also being extremely lightweight..
2. Organic Mat-based Shingles: This type of asphalt shingle roofing has a recycled felt paper layer for its base. They are heavier, thicker, and slightly more expensive than fiberglass shingles, but they are also more durable and flexible. The downside to Organic Mat-based Shingles is they are less fire resistant and susceptible to warping.

Honestly, all of the shingle manufacturers above have great shingles. Shingles come in 3 tiers of quality. The cheapest are the 3-tab shingles. These were very popular 15+ years ago. Nowadays, rarely do any professional roofers install these. The next level is architectural dimensional shingles. You can get these in 25, 35, and 50 warrantly grades. The final level is luxury shingles. These are the most expensive and typically start at 50 warranty periods. Luxury shingles are the ones to go for if you plan on staying in your home for more than 25 years. They are high quality, thick, and triple laminate dimensional shingles with three-piece laminated fiberglass construction. They are durable and strong, and come in many styles and colors.

As far as asphalt shingles go, the thicker the shingle, the longer it is going to last. Most importantly, you must hire a qualified experienced certified roofing contractor to do the installation. While it is typical for shingles to last between 20-40 years, the lifespan of your roof can be impacted by improper installation, complicated roof design, and long-term exposure to harsh weather conditions.

Improper roofing installation can leave your new roof vulnerable to leaks and structural damage that impair the shingles’ flexibility, durability, and waterproofing. This can mean you could be potentially replacing your roof after only 8 - 12 years.
